Project Overview

The Interaction Design Collaborative (IXD) is a student-led organization that has been instrumental in providing a vibrant community and valuable experiences for students specializing in User Experience (UX) at Utah Valley University (UVU). With a strong focus on industry exposure, skill development, and camaraderie, IXD has evolved from a modest club into a thriving organization.

Initial Involvement

During my sophomore year, I discovered the Interaction Design Club, a group within the Digital Media major that attended events, hosted speakers, and undertook exciting projects. Intrigued by their activities, I eagerly joined their meetings, which were led by President Shelly Gardner and Vice President Kevin Acosta. While the attendance was initially sparse, the club's events were engaging and enjoyable. However, as Shelly and Kevin graduated, a leadership vacuum emerged, and the future of the club hung in the balance. It was at this critical juncture that Shelly approached me, presenting a unique opportunity to lead and shape the future of the Interaction Design Collaborative (IXD).

Organizational Development

Taking on the challenge, I embarked on a mission to revitalize the organization. With an initial low following, I implemented targeted advertising within relevant classes to raise awareness about IXD and attract student volunteers, such as Roger Chamberlain who helped implement many of the core changes to the organizations structure. Our efforts resulted in a successful transition from a club to an official organization status, freeing us from the limitations imposed by the UVU Club Department. However, this change also brought the challenge of funding, as we no longer had access to club funds. Through resourcefulness and collaboration with the Digital Media department, we found alternative avenues for securing financial support. Moreover, we transformed the leadership structure, establishing a board of dedicated student volunteers who actively contributed to organizing events and driving IXD's growth.

Adobe Max and other Virtual Events
took place during COVID

The unforeseen arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant obstacles to our organization. As classes transitioned to online formats, IXD faced the daunting task of adapting our activities to the new normal. Many planned initiatives, such as book clubs and movie nights, had to be postponed. However, we persevered, leveraging digital platforms to continue engaging students and maintaining a sense of community. Despite the challenges, our determination and creativity allowed us to host a series of successful virtual events, such as watching Adobe Max, that uplifted student morale and provided valuable learning experiences.

Navigating the COVID-19 Era

Our Bi-Monthly Book Club Highlighted Fascinating UX Reading Discussions

Following the resumption of in-person activities, we encountered the challenge of limited involvement due to prevailing concerns about health and safety. To reinvigorate participation, we introduced engaging events like the inspirational book club, where we explored design literature and fostered deep discussions. We also organized movie nights, creating opportunities for students to enjoy cinematic experiences on the immersive UX Lab screen alongside their friends and family.

Sustaining Success and Legacy

As my leadership tenure with IXD drew to a close, I prioritized ensuring a smooth transition and securing the organization's future. Teison Edwards, a motivated sophomore, stepped up to lead IXD's continued success. To generate enthusiasm and gauge interest in upcoming UXplore Events (where students were able to work with UX organizations and get real-life-experience), we organized an end-of-semester gathering that attracted over 20+ eager participants. This event served as a testament to IXD's enduring legacy and its potential for future growth and expansion.

Key Takeaways

My three-plus years of involvement with IXD provided invaluable insights into leadership and the UX field. Nurturing a community of volunteers, especially during challenging times like the pandemic, required adept management and accountability. By offering meaningful opportunities for service and personal growth, we accomplished extraordinary outcomes, including facilitating professional connections and even securing job opportunities for our members.

In conclusion, working within the Interaction Design Collaborative (IXD) has been transformative, refining my skills as a leader, and deepening my understanding of the importance of adaptability, community building, and effective collaboration. The weekly meetings, unpaid hours, and passion for volunteer work have shaped me into a seasoned UX professional.
